World Movie Night: Wed, May 21st: 6:00-8:30pm

Please join us for World Movie Night on Wednesday, May 21, 2025: 6:00-8:30pm at the Malden Public Library. We will be showing a movie based on the bestselling Brazilian memoir, Ainda Estou Aqui, (I’m Still Here), about the life of Marcelo Rubens Paiva. The film stars Fernanada Torres, Selton Mello, and Fernanda Montenegro. The movie won an Oscar this year for Best International Feature Film and Fernanda Torres won a Golden Globe for Best Actress

“While Brazil faces the tightening grip of a military dictatorship, Eunice Paiva, a mother of five, is forced to reinvent herself and her family, resisting the oppression that hangs over the country. From the acclaimed director of Central Station and The Motorcycle Diaries, Walter Salles and based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s memoir, this story portrays an important part of Brazil’s hidden history.” Rated PG-13 (136 min.) (2024) 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

This film is one of the best of the year and not to be missed.

TONIGHT! 2nd Annual Haitian Culture Night: 6:00-8:00pm

Please join us on Wednesday, May 28, 2025: 6:00-8:00pm for our 2nd Annual Haitian Culture Night filled with Haitian art, poetry, music, books, language, and food.
Our featured guests include Haitian artists, Professor Joel Renfort and his wife, artist, Martine Renfort. The Renforts have their beautiful art featured in the Malden Public Library during the month of May. Mr. Renfort will talk about his art and poetry in his discussion, “When Painting Meets Poetry.”
Just added is our featured guest, musician, Kera Washington, Zili Misik Founder & Band Leader and the Director of Yanvalou Drumming and Dance Ensemble, Wellesley College. Ms. Washington has been performing and teaching music, using Boston as her base, for over twenty years. Her first love is percussion, which she found while studying ethnomusicology at Wellesley College, Wesleyan University, Brown University, and in Interdisciplinary Studies at Tufts. She studies with master musicians from Haiti, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Brazil, and the United States. She is on faculty in the Music Department of Wellesley College.
Erga Pierette, 1st Vice President NAACP Mystic Valley Area Branch and Dean of Community, Culture and Equity, Malden Catholic will be our emcee for the night and will read some Haitian poetry and will talk about Haiti.
Please join us for some samples of popular Haitian foods from Grêp Kafé. Start learning Haitian Creole with one of our language apps, check out some books in Haitian Creole for kids and adults, and learn a little bit about Haiti and the country’s interesting historical connection to Malden, Massachusetts.
This event is generously co-sponsored by the Friends Of The Malden Public Library and co-sponsored by the NAACP Mystic Valley Area Branch.

When Painting Meets Poetry by Joel and Martine Renfort

Joel and Martine Renfort are freelance artists who produce art linked to the currents of surrealism, realism and abstract art. Their current exhibit When Painting Meets Poetry will be on display throughout the month of May.  Themes of hope, happiness, nature,  and history can be found in their work.

In addition to paintings, they enjoy transforming clothing, bottles, and many other creations. Examples can be found in the glass display case inside the library.

A reception for the artists will be held on Thursday May 15th from 7-8pm, and everyone is welcome to attend. 

Joseph Jung’s photographs on display in April

Joseph Jung is a photographer based in Malden.  His images will be on display throughout the month of April and the library will be hosting an Artist Reception on Monday April 7th from 6-7pm.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

These photos were shot on Kodak Ektar 100, a 35mm film known for its high saturation and fine grain. The bold colors and contrast produce an image that is not necessarily faithful to the original scene, but a hyper-rendered version, as if computer-generated. I felt this look was suitable for capturing nights in my hometown in southern California, where the abundance of artificial light in the absence of people gives the uncanny impression of being in an amusement park after hours. The light in these photos comes from various sources – lampposts, neon signage, passing cars, a television. As these are long exposures ranging anywhere from one to thirty seconds, light is shown behaving in ways that aren’t apparent to the naked eye, whose “shutter speed” is much higher.

Malden Reads Film Screening & Discussion: Wed., March 26th:6:00-8:00pm

Please join us for the Malden Reads Film Screening and discussion about William And The Windmill. We will be showing this film at the Malden Public Library on Wednesday, March 26, 2025: 6:00-8:00pm. This documentary explores the life of William Kamkwamba, author of the book, The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind, Malden Reads’ 2025 selection.

“With only a library book as his guide, 14-year-old William Kamkwamba builds a windmill in his Malawian village that changes his life forever. Using junk parts and an inexhaustible imagination, he harnesses enough energy to power a generator that saves his family from famine and resuscitates his dying farming community. An instant media sensation, the teen soon has the ability to chart a previously unimaginable future of TEDtalks, Ivy League schools, and speaking tours. But despite the help of an American entrepreneur who helps navigate his success, some changes threaten to capsize him. He was once just a kid back home, but suddenly he’s a village leader.” William And The Windmill is directed by Ben Nabors. The film is Not Rated (97 min.) (2013).

Stephanie Stigliano Artist Reception February 3, 2025

The Malden Public Library is pleased to showcase local artist Stephanie Stigliano during the month of February.  Stephanie has experience with many mediums but currently enjoys making prints and artist books. Her prints will be in the main hallway and her artist books will be in the glass display case inside.

“Making prints gives me the chance to make different versions of one idea: I can play with the color combinations or change the process. It is fun to experiment with both of those aspects. Lately I make monoprints and combine them with relief prints, brush painting, and collage (Chine-collè). Making artist’s books gives me alternative ways of presenting the prints as an unfolding story. The structure reflects the content of the piece. I was originally trained as a jeweler and I use similar skills when I create books and prints. My inspiration comes from time spent in nature and everyday observations. Teaching students how to make books and prints is also an energizing activity—it is a delight to help people discover their inner artist.”

A reception will be held on Monday February 3rd from 6-7pm, everyone is welcome to attend and light refreshments will be served.

The film stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, and Bowen Yang. This movie was just nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Join us for Family Movie Night on Wednesday, December 11, 2024: 6:00-8:00pm at the Malden Public Library. We will be showing a movie based on the book, The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. This animated film highlights the voices of Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, and Ving Rhames.

“The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot, Rozzum unit 7134, ‘Roz’ for short, that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.” Rated PG.
