The Real Cinco de Mayo Story

Join us for a fun bilingual storytelling program (in English and Spanish) about the real Cinco de Mayo on Wednesday evening, May 1st, at 6:30 pm. Learn about the history and culture of the Mexican people. We recommend this event as best suited for kids 5-8 years old but families are always welcome!

This program is supported by a grant from the Malden Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Special Event Movie Night: 6:00-8:00pm

Join us for a Special Event Movie Night on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 from 6:00-8:00pm. We will be showing the film CODA, which won the Best Picture Academy Award in 2021.

“Seventeen-year-old Ruby (Emilia Jones) is the sole hearing member of a deaf family — a CODA, child of deaf adults. Her life revolves around acting as interpreter for her parents (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur) and working on the family’s struggling fishing boat every day before school with her father and older brother (Daniel Durant). But when Ruby joins her high school’s choir club…[she] finds herself torn between the obligations she feels to her family and the pursuit of her own dreams.” This movie was filmed in Gloucester, Rockport, Beverly, and Boston, Massachusetts.

Rated PG-13 (111 min.) (2021) Free snacks will be provided. Movie times are approximate.

This special event is co-sponsored by Malden Reads and Malden Public Library. Pick up a copy of Malden Reads Season 14 book, Being Heumann by Judith Heumann at the Malden Public Library.

The previously scheduled film based on Alice Walker’s book, The Color Purple, is postponed and will be shown in May 2024. Please call the Malden Public Library at 781-324-0218 for more information.

Death Cafe

Have you ever wanted to talk about death but don’t know where to start?  The Malden Public Library will be hosting its first Death Cafe on Monday April 29th starting at 6pm. If you’ve never heard of them before, a Death Cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counseling session.

At a Death Cafe people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death.

We are out of Eclipse Glasses

Our programs are full! We have completely maxed out our supply of eclipse glasses. But if you still want to view the eclipse with us we will be live streaming it through NASA on a big screen in the library. You can also join us on the lawn and bring your own viewing device such as a pin hole viewer. You can learn how to make one here: Pin Hole Camera

We at the library hope that you have a happy and safe eclipse! And thank you for being so excited about science and our planet. It is wonderful that an event like this can bring so many people together!

April Book Discussion Thursday April 25th from 7-8pm

The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner is the title for April.

“Hidden in the depths of eighteenth-century London, a secret apothecary shop caters to an unusual kind of clientèle. Women across the city whisper of a mysterious figure named Nella who sells well-disguised poisons to use against the oppressive men in their lives. But the apothecary’s fate is jeopardized when her newest patron, a precocious twelve-year-old, makes a fatal mistake, sparking a string of consequences that echo through the centuries.” Bibliocommons
