Youth Movie Afternoon – Aug 8th

Youth age 10 and up and families are invited to watch the first ever live action Pokemon movie at the Malden Public Library. Join us on Thursday August 8th from 3:00 to 5:00 as we watch a film full of Bulbasaurs and Psyducks. We will have snacks and refreshments on stock as well.

This film is based on the popular Pokemon video games based on the character Detective Pikachu, as Ryan Reynolds voices the familiar yellow electric creature sporting a Sherlockian cap.

Young Adult Yoga – August 7th

Young Adults in the 5th through 12th grade are welcome to join our free Yoga Class in the Macarrio Room on Wednesday, August 7th from 4:00 – 4:45. Feel free to bring your own yoga mats or use the library’s collection.

Space in this program is limited and it is first come first serve. Stop by the library for some relaxation and to center yourself before you check out a book.

Movie Night: Wed. July 17th: 6:00-8:00pm

Join us for Movie Night on Wednesday, July 17, 2019, from 6:00-8:00pm at the Malden Public Library.  We will be showing a recent documentary about Apollo 11 in honor of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, July 20, 1969.  Rolling Stone writes of the movie, “It is a revelation….”  This movie is part of our Summer Reading program, “A Universe of Stories.”

“From director Todd Douglas Miller comes a cinematic event 50 years in the making…the film takes viewers straight to the heart of NASA’s most celebrated mission, the one that first put men on the moon, and forever made Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin into household names.”

RogerEbert.com writes “Apollo 11 isn’t like other documentaries about the first moon mission. In fact it isn’t like most other movies period.”  Rolling Stone adds, “This doesn’t just feel like a movie.  It gives you the sensation that you’ve been transported right into the middle of history.”

Summer Concert with Brazilian music of Sonho Meu

The Live on the Lawn Summer Concert Series continues on Wednesday, July 24th at 7 p.m. featuring Sonho Meu.  Sonho Meu is fluent in traditional and popular music from across Brazil, from pagode and samba to MPB and baião. The Boston-based group digs deep into the rich and diverse styles of Brazilian music, taking pride in representing this classic slice of the country’s culture with love, respect and joy.

Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and experience a great night of outdoor live music at the Malden Public Library (36 Salem Street).  Grab a spot on the lawn and enjoy some great entertainment!

The Live on the Lawn Series will continue with the Teal Street Band on August 7.  All concerts are free and sponsored by the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, with additional support from the Friends of the Library. In case of rain, concerts will be moved inside.

Happy Birthday Mayor Converse at Fellsmere Park

The City of Malden and Councillor-At-Large Debbie DeMaria invite residents to celebrate the 199th birthday of Elisha Slade Converse on Thursday, July 25th at 11 AM at Fellsmere Park (Savin Street.) The event will include complimentary birthday cake, lemonade – and “shoe” themed crafts for the kids.

Fellsmere Park was established in 1893 with the efforts of Mayors Elisha Converse (1881-1893) and John Sleeper (1893-1903). Elisha Slade and Mary Diana Edmands Converse were major benefactors of many of Malden’s most important institutions, including the Malden Public Library (Converse Memorial Building), Pine Banks Park, the Malden YMCA, the First Baptist Church, the Malden Hospital, the Malden Home for the Aged Persons, the Malden Auditorium, Malden Industrial Aid Society, the Malden Day Nursery, and many other community organizations.  Converse also founded the Malden Bank, later the First National Bank, where he served as president for 30 years.

This event is part of the Go Local: Converse 2020 brought to you with federal funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

Beautiful City: Portraits of People at the Malden Public Library

Join us Wednesday, July 31st from 7:00-8:00pm for a Reception of our July Rotating Art Artist,
photographer, Carol Woodruff, of the Malden Public Library.  “Beautiful City” is a photography exhibit
highlighting the amazing diversity of people who visit the Malden Public Library every day. Join us
to view the photographs and a short film of this “Beautiful City.”  “This program is supported in part
by a grant from the Malden Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council,a state agency.”

“Beautiful City” will be on exhibit at the Library through the month of July.

Youth Tie-Dye Craft

Youth in the 3rd through 12th grade can join us Friday, July 19th from 3:00 – 4:30 PM to create your own Tie-Dye t-shirt. We will be taking to the front lawn in good weather to rubber-band, dye and take home your own creations.

No sign-up required but space and supplies are limited, so make sure to arrive on time. Feel free to bring your own 100% Cotton shirt as well, but it is not required.

Young Adult Summer Reading Program Log

Welcome to the Malden Public Library’s 2019 Young Adult Sumer Reading Program. Our theme this year is “A UNIVERSE OF STORIES”, and we hope you engage by reading, coming to our programs, and logging in everything you read in order to win prizes and complete challenges!

How To Log Reading Hours:

  • Visit maldenpubliclibrary.org/summer-reading-2019/
  • Click “Teen Sign Up” and fill out the form with your Name, E-mail and how many hours you read.
  • Log in Starting on Monday, July 1st to start logging in your hours!

How To Earn Prizes:

-Each week that you read 5 hours or more you are eligible for a prize from the Prize Box at the Information Desk at the Library. You also earn an additional Raffle ticket for the prizes at End of the Summer Party (August 15th).

-The TOP READER (Whoever reads and logs in the most hours) each and every week will earn a $25 Gift Card to places like iTunes, Target, and Amazon.com.

-The three Young Adults who read the most over the 6 weeks of the program will earn Certificates and gift cards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places TOP READERS.
