Local History Talk on Grave Stone Restoration and Preservation

On Monday October 2nd at 6:30 pm the Malden Public Library will welcome Epoch Preservation, Inc to give a presentation on the important work they do repairing gravestones in some of Massachusetts’s oldest historic burial grounds. This program is a great way to learn about historic cemeteries, restoration and preservation efforts, and a neat way to kick off spooky season with some interesting historical knowledge. All are welcome!

Firefighter Storytime: Thursday, October 19, 10:30 a.m.

Young children are invited to join us for this special drop-in storytime program on Thursday, October 19, at 10:30 a.m. Malden Firefighter Sara Finn will read aloud a picture book and talk about fire safety and what firefighters do. No registration required. Recommended for ages 3 and up. Preschool groups are welcome, but please call 781-388-0803 in advance.

Wine Tasting to Benefit the Friends of the MPL

Join us on Tuesday, September 19 from 6–8 pm at The Malden Center Fine Wines for a wine tasting fundraiser to benefit the Friends of the Malden Public Library.

You can try different wines, enjoy a charcuterie board, get 10% off each purchase, and have a fun evening with friends (bring some along or meet new ). The Friends of MPL will also have an assortment of books about wine and related topics on sale at our book sale prices.

Author Talk with Sandra Mary Platt Norcross Sept. 11th at 6pm

Come to the library Monday night at 6pm for an author talk with Malden high graduate Sandra Mary Platt Norcross. She will be sharing her memoir with us: “The Secrets Return to the River” which chronicles the amazing life of her mother: Helen Barrington Platt. This is a book for anyone who loves stories about people finding their own path to happiness and for those who love historical fiction and nonfiction. Set in Scotland, Canada and the US, “The Secrets Return to the River” takes the reader through the ups and downs of a life; full of secrets, joy, despair, and hope.

Coffee, Cookies & Conversation: Sat., Sept. 16th: 10-11am (Welcoming Week)

Please join us for our first “Coffee, Cookies, and Conversation” event for our annual Welcoming Week (September 8-17, 2023). Meet your neighbors in a casual setting, for a cup of coffee, some cookies, and relaxed conversation.

Welcoming Week is a global campaign that connects neighbors of all backgrounds in their communities. At the Malden Public Library we celebrate the values that unite us as immigrants, refugees, and non-immigrants.

Movie Night: Wed., September 20, 2023: 6:00-8:00pm

Join us for Movie Night on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 from 6:00-8:00pm. We will be showing a recent and excellent South Korean film about “Past Lives,” which features the immigrant experience and outstanding performances by Greta Lee and Teo Yoo.

“Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrest apart after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea. Two decades later, they are reunited in New York for one fateful week as they confront notions of destiny, love, and the choices that make a life, in this heartrending modern romance.” Rated PG-13 (106 min.) Welcoming Week: September 8-17, 2023

Join us at the Malden Public Library for Welcoming Week on September 8-17, 2023. Celebrated in communities around the globe, Welcoming Week is an annual campaign that connects neighbors of all backgrounds through community-informed activities and events. Welcoming Week provides communities the opportunity to publicly proclaim welcoming values, foster a mutual understanding between immigrants and non-immigrants, and build a deeper sense of belonging for all.

Throughout Welcoming Week we will provide information about local community organizations, including resources for English classes, immigration & citizenship information, food & housing information, and more. We will also have some craft kits available.

This year we will have a special event on Saturday, September 16, 2023: 10:00-11:00am for “Coffee, Cookies, and Conversation.” Meet your neighbors in a relaxed environment for a cup of coffee and great conversation!

And don’t miss our Movie Night on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, from 6:00-8:00pm.
