Join us at the Malden Public Library for Welcoming Week on September 13-22, 2024. The theme for this year’s Welcoming Week is “We’re All In!” Celebrated in communities around the globe, Welcoming Week is an annual campaign that connects neighbors of all backgrounds through community-informed activities and events. Welcoming Week provides communities the opportunity to publicly proclaim welcoming values, foster a mutual understanding between immigrants and non-immigrants, and build a deeper sense of belonging for all.

Throughout Welcoming Week we will provide information about local community organizations, including resources for English classes, immigration & citizenship information, food & housing information, job information, language learning, and more. We will also have some take & make craft kits for adults and kids.

This year on Saturday, September 14, 2024: 10:00-11:00am we will have our 2^nd Annual “Coffee, Cookies, and Conversation” at the Malden Public Library. Meet your neighbors in a relaxed environment for a cup of coffee and great conversation! Bikeeny Caffe of Malden has generously donated their amazing coffee for this event. Thank you Bikeeny Caffe!!

And don’t miss our Movie Night on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, from 6:00-8:15pm. We will be showing a “hidden gem” of a movie about a young Korean-American man raised in the “Blue Bayou” as he makes a life for himself and his family as he confronts the ghosts of his past. Rated R (117 min.) (2021) Free snacks will be provided and movie times are approximate.

On September 19, 2024 we will have a Story Time for children (ages 3+) at 10:30am and a craft time for children (ages 3+) at 11:00am.

Welcoming Week 2024

The Malden Public Library is displaying artwork by Darion Breslau and Lisa Sears during the month of September.  Darion Breslau started working with chain maille when he was thirteen years old and hasn’t looked back since.  His pieces are beautiful, whimsical and incredibly unique.  Darion’s artwork can be seen in the main hallway and an artist reception will be held on Monday Sept 9th from 7-8pm.

Lisa Sears works in watercolor, acrylic, collage and whatever mark-making tools are most needed, her goal has been to try everything, to repeat nothing, and to go from complete abstraction to simplicity to hyper fantastical as she considers different aspects of a theme. The result of this on-going challenge is hundreds of small works.  Her artwork can be seen inside the glass display case located near the teen area.

Join us for Movie Night on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Malden Public Library. We will be showing an American Fiction film based on the novel, Erasure, by Percival Everett. Everett was previously nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for his book, Telephone. The film stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, and Sterling K. Brown, and is directed by Cord Jefferson. Percival Everett’s most recent book, James, was just longlisted for the Booker Prize.

“A novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from Black entertainment uses a pen name to write a book that propels him into the heart of the hypocrisy and madness he claims to disdain.” The film has a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Rated R (117 min.) (2023)

Join us for Library Presents Movie Night in the Park at Rivers Edge on Wednesday, August 21 at 7:30pm. The movie will be on The Park at Rivers Edge Great Lawn adjacent to 200 River’s Edge Drive in Medford. The Great Lawn section of the park will be transformed into an outdoor movie theatre where residents and visitors of all ages are welcome to gather and enjoy a free movie night featuring “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” (Rated PG-13). The movie begins at sunset at 7:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Sponsored by Preotle, Lane & Associates and the Malden Public Library. Attendees should bring their own blankets and chairs for use. There will be free snacks and water provided. Wellington Station is just 0.4 miles from Rivers Edge. Free parking is available at the Rivers Edge Garage.
