How to Take a Sensory Nature Walk (Urban Ecology Series)

Don’t go for just any walk, take a sensory nature walk!
Cultivate a keen eye—and nose, ear, and hand—when evaluating the qualities of our living world. Then use these observational skills to explore your local urban or suburban environment.
This program was designed by the MIT Public Library Innovation Exhange (PLIX) for students in grades 3-8, but can be enjoyed by anyone.
Pick up the Urban Ecology kit at the Malden Public Library. Call 781-324-0218 to reserve yours! If you can’t obtain one, most of these materials, or replacements for them can be found in the home.
This is part one in the Urban Ecology Series. Join Librarian Jean live Wednesday, August 12th at 3PM for part 2: Tangible Ecosystem (be sure to collect 8-10 specimens on your walk before this program). The Zoom link will be posted in the event calendar a few minutes before the program.

Armchair Travel: Planning Your Grown-Up Gap Year in Paradise

Join us on Wednesday, August 5, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM to learn that a Gap year is not just for high school and university students.  Many young working adults to mid-career executives, and even people close to retirement are enjoying a gap year in paradise.  A gap year can help you pursue your passions, immerse yourself in another culture, volunteer, develop career skills or explore new career paths, learn a new language, or even provide an opportunity to “practice retirement” and extend your working life.  This program will provide information to help you answer those nagging questions, “Can I Afford It? “What about my pets and children?” and “What will it be like returning to work?”

Friday Folk and Fairy Tales for Adults Complete Schedule!

Spend your Friday afternoons with the staff at the Malden Public Library reading you grown up folk and fairy tales. Listen to heros, heroines, tragic lovers, transformed travelers, and dancers with the devil as they meet challenges and overcome them. Let us tell you a story and while we are at it inspire you to take another look at your own challenges with fresh eyes and renewed purpose. Books and stories are our road maps to the struggles that always face human kind. And fairy tales take those struggles and distill them down to their essential matter, hide them in a bit of the fantastic, and then give us the strength and inspiration to push on no matter how big the dragon or how large our pile of straw becomes.

We’ll post new readings every Friday at 1215pm, you can catch the link on our calendar or Facebook event listing. You can also listen and watch on our Youtube channel or find our playlist and catch up on the stories you missed.

A Zoom link will be posted here a few minutes before the program begins. Email Librarian Jean at jslavkovsky@maldenpubliclibrary.org to have the link emailed to you.
