Friends’ 19th Annual Wine Tasting Gala 5.15.26

We are excited to announce the Friends of the Malden Public Library’s 2026 Wine Tasting Gala will be held on Friday, May 15 at 7:00pm! During this annual fundraising event, supporters of the Malden Public Library will arrive in our historical Converse Memorial Building and Art Galleries to enjoy wines from around the world, sample menus from local restaurants, and bid in our Silent Auction. This is the Friends’ most memorable social event of the season, attracting hundreds of people and selling out year after year. All proceeds from the gala will go towards Library resources including book readings and discussions, concerts and art exhibits, museum passes, supplies for children’s programs, books and graphic novels for young adults, videos, CDs, DVDs, large-print books, and more.
All wine and mocktail samples will be available for purchase from Kappy’s Fine Wines & Spirits. You will receive 10% off your order when you buy 6 or more bottles. 10% of all sales will be donated to the Malden Public Library.

$50 tickets will include the wine tasting from 7:00-9:00PM, food, music, silent auction, and of course wine.
$75 VIP tickets will include a tour of the Art Galleries from 6:30-7:00PM.

3rd Annual Haitian Culture Night: Wed., May 20th: 6:00-8:00pm

Save The Date! Please join us on Wednesday, May 20, 2026: 6:00-8:00pm at the Malden Public LIbrary for our 3rd Annual Haitian Culture Night filled with Haitian art, poetry, music, books, language, and food.
We will have some samples of popular Haitian foods from Grêp Kafé. Start learning Haitian Creole with one of our language apps, check out some books in Haitian Creole for kids and adults, and learn a little bit about Haiti and the country’s interesting historical connection to Malden, Massachusetts. More details will be added soon.
Everyone is welcome to join us at this all-ages event. We look forward to seeing you there!

H. H. Richardson Remembered: Networking and Connecting

Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886), one of America’s first master architects, designed several local buildings that provide a vivid understanding of his greatness. They include 1) Medford’s Grace Episcopal Church (1868), 2) Boston’s Trinity Episcopal Church (1877), and 3) Malden’s Converse Memorial Library (1885). To gain a better sense of Richardson himself, some highlights of his life are important to explore.
Dee Morris is a scholar and educational consultant specializing in the nineteenth-century history of Greater Boston. She is the author of A Brief History of Somerville, Medford: A Brief History and Boston in the Golden Age of Spiritualism: Séances, Mediums & Immortality. Her goal is help us all connect to our civic ancestors. Sponsored by the Robinson Lecture Fund.

Sky View- Drone Photography

“Sky View”

Join us at the Malden Public Library for a presentation of aerial photographs by Joseph Turner.

This photography presentation offers images from a unique point of view – the “Sky View.”  We are accustomed to viewing buildings, historic sites and colorful venues by looking at them straight ahead.  What if you could see those same familiar sites from above, from a Sky View?

The presentation includes aerial photographs of historic buildings, houses of worship, parks, light houses, and other colorful sites.  The presentation is compelling because most have never seen views like this before, from an aerial photographer’s viewpoint.

The program demystifies the use of drones, illustrates the variety of drone uses in the public sector and highlights FAA’s emphasis on safety.

Earth Day Awareness Film: “We’re All Plastic People Now”

Please join us for a special showing of the documentary, “We’re All Plastic People Now” on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 from 6:00-7:30pm at the Malden Public Library. A short discussion and Q&A with Eileen Ryan, from Beyond Plastics Greater Boston will follow the film.

“In an era of throw-away ease, convenience has cost us our well-being. Plastics have been found inside our bodies- in our colons, our brains, and even in mothers’ developing wombs. Scientists around the country are sounding the alarm, but without public buy-in, there is little that can be done. How much evidence do we need before we decide to take action?”

Movie Night: Wed., May 6th: 6:00-8:00pm

Please join us for Movie Night on Wednesday, May 6, 2026: 6:00-8:00pm at the Malden Public Library. We will be showing the movie for Haitian Heritage Month about Mountains. The film stars Atibon Nazaire, Sheila Anozier, and Chris Renois. The film is directed by Monica Sorelle and it has won 11 film festival awards.

“A Haitian demolition worker is faced with the realities of redevelopment as he is tasked with dismantling his rapidly gentrifying neighborhood [in Little Haiti, Miami].” The film explores the changing nature of neighborhoods and how communities change over time. In the Haitian Creole language there is a proverb: “Dèyè mòn gen mòn” which means, “Behind mountains there are mountains.” This is a famous Haitian proverb that roughly means when you overcome one obstacle, there is another greater obstacle or challenge ahead of you. This Haitian proverb speaks to the idea of having resilience in life.

Olivia Laughlin Booktalk

The Size of Mars is Laughlin’s debut collection that navigates through her journey of heartbreak, trauma, and self reclamation. She pairs her artwork with her poetry to fully immerse the reader into her world. Her hope is that her art has long enough arms to reach those who need to be held, and her poetry to have a loud enough voice to guide us home to ourselves.
