Author Event – Dr. Jamie Wilson

Thursday January 11th from 7pm – 8pm.

Jamie Wilson is a Professor of History at Salem State University where he teaches courses in Black History, History of Race and Ethnicity, Race and Ethnicity Studies, and United States History. He is also the author and editor of half dozen books including a recently published biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., titled Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Life in American History. For the 2023-2024 academic year Wilson is the lead historian with the National Council for History Education to help create a professional development program for teachers in the School District of Osceola County and Brevard Public Schools in Florida that centers around the theme The Power of Music During the Civil Rights Movement. He lives in Malden with his wife, Staci, and two challenging, but lovely daughters.

YA Craft: Candle Making on January 11th @3PM

Young Adults in the 6th through 12th grade are invited to join our craft day on January 11th, from 3:00 – 4:30 in the Program room. We will be designing and melting our own candles in the library, adding fragrances, colors and even the naming our own creations.

No sign up is required but space and time is limited, so make sure to come as early as you can to this fun craft.

Pro-Wrestling Storytime: Saturday, January 13, 11 a.m.

Saturday January 13th at 11 am rush down to the library for a slammin’ good time. Professional wrestlers from the RWA will be sharing some of their favorite picture books and a craft for so good family friendly fun. That’s 3 f’s, brother… and don’t you forget it. We’ll see you there!

Poetry and Music with Local Authors Peter F. Crowley and Linda Werbner

Local author and poet Peter F Crowley will be reading from his newest books, The Night and Other Stories and his book of poetry, Empire’s End.  Musician Dan Morse will be playing music to some of Peter’s reading.

They will be joined by local poet Linda Werbner.  She is a North Shore-based therapist and writer who is doing her best to fix this broken world. Occasionally, she picks a banjo and if you know her long enough, she will make you a quilt and some pretty good eggplant parm.

This event will be on Zoom only and registration is required.

Movie Night: Wednesday, January 17th, 2024

Join us for Movie Night on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 from 6:00-8:30pm. We will be showing a film starring Paul Giamatti about The Holdovers, a group of New England prep students who are left behind during the holidays. The movie was filmed throughout Boston and Massachusetts.

“A curmudgeonly instructor (Giamatti) at a New England prep school is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them a damaged, brainy troublemaker, and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam.” Rated R (134 min.) (2023)

Origami Night Tuesday, December 19

Join us on Tuesday, December 19th from 6:30–8 and learn to create a beautiful origami wreath, led by MPL staff member Carol Woodruff.

Let’s Talk About A Poem with Lloyd Schwartz

Our January program will feature two poems: Sonnet 23 : Methought I Saw My Late Espouse Saint by John Milton and Surprised by Joy by William Wordsworth.

Lloyd will be reading the poems then leading the discussion for this online event.  Registration is required.
