Join us for Movie Night on Thursday, February 13, 2025: 5:30-8:15pm at the Malden Public Library. We will be showing a movie based on the bestselling novel, Wicked, by Gregory Maguire. The film stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, and Bowen Yang. This movie was just nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Local History Trivia Night 1.13.25

Join Local History Library and quizmaster, Phillip Wright, when he tests your Malden knowledge at this fun and illuminating trivia night. Prizes will be awarded as will local bragging rights to all those who can answer the most who, what, when, and wheres of Malden history. This event starts at 6pm on Monday, January 13th in the historic local history room of the Converse Memorial Building. This event is for single competitors and champions. No teams. Origami with Carol 1.14.25

Origami with Carol is back for2025! If you are looking to de-stress or make a little something to add color and texture to your month, then join Tuesday, January 14th, from 6-8pm. This month we are learning how to fold an origami flower. Hint: this is a great piece to liven up any room in the dead of winter.
Space is limited, so please call 781-324-0218 to sign up, or register at the information desk. This program is best for adults and crafty teens. Supplies are limited and we ask that you bring a ruler to help sharpen the folds.

Brazilian Workers Center

The Family Welcome Center at the Allston BWC provides assistance and resources (including emergency housing) to new arrivals from many countries.

“This helpline number is open to all Massachusetts-based providers serving immigrants and refugees and accepts voicemails 24/7 at (508) 293-1871. This helpline operates as a non-emergency service.

  • Callers are asked to leave a voicemail with their contact details and their inquiry (without disclosing any client-specific information).
  • The MIRA Helpline staff will review voicemails to assess urgency, directing urgent inquiries to our Staff Attorney for immediate response.
  • If a caller seeks resources, these will be sent via email.
  • For all other matters requiring an attorney’s response, the Helpline staff will arrange a callback and provide further instructions.
  • For expedited service, providers are encouraged to fill out the online intake form. Once the form is submitted, providers don’t need to call the helpline, the team will reach out to them with a response to their inquiry.”

Author Talk: Hudson Valley Reckoning by Debra Bruno, with Eleanor C. Mire

The Malden Public Library is excited to be hosting an author talk with Debra Bruno and Malden resident Eleanor C. Mire on Monday, December 9th from 6-7pm, in the Maccario Room. This will be a compelling discussion on family history, slavery in the north-Atlantic, and the challenges of racial reconciliation. This event will be dual in-person and on Zoom; a Zoom link will be sent out the day of the event. Bruno will be joining us via Zoom, and Mire will be joining us in person. Registration is required. “A Hudson Valley Reckoning tells the long-ignored story of slavery’s history in upstate New York through Debra Bruno’s absorbing chronicle that uncovers her Dutch ancestors’ slave-holding past and leads to a deep connection with the descendants of the enslaved people her family owned.

Bruno, who grew up in New York’s Hudson Valley knowing little about her Dutch heritage, was shaken when a historian told her that her Dutch ancestors were almost certainly slaveholders. Driven by this knowledge, Bruno began to unearth her family’s past. In the last will and testament of her ancestor, she found the first evidence: human beings bequeathed to his family along with animals and furniture. The more she expanded her family tree, the more enslavers she found. She reached out to Black Americans tracing their own ancestry, and by serendipitous luck became friends with Eleanor C. Mire, a descendent of a woman enslaved by Bruno’s Dutch ancestors.

A Hudson Valley Reckoning recounts Bruno’s journey into the nearly forgotten history of Northern slavery and of the thousands of enslaved people brought in chains to Manhattan and the Hudson Valley. Introducing My China Roots: A New Database for Researching Chinese Ancestors Livestream at MPL

Thursday November 21st at 3pm on Zoom and  via Livestream in the Local History Room of the Malden Public Library. The Boston Public Library is hosting a program introducing a new Chinese Ancestry database available to library card holders: My China Roots. This program offers an introduction to the database and is led by researcher and Head of Global Collections for MCR, Clotilde Yap. She will provide a brief introduction to Chinese family history research, including how to get started, key challenges, and what clues to look for both at home and online. Finally, Clotilde will provide a live demo of the database, highlighting some of the new records and features that have recently been added.
 
In partnership with the BPL, the local history department will provide an interactive live stream. If you are interested in using My China Roots or are curious about the program join us at the Malden Public Library. We will handle the technology and even provide an opportunity to ask questions.

Clotilde Yap has assisted families from around the world in tracing their Chinese family history since joining My China Roots in 2017. As the Head of Global Collections for MCR, she researches untapped archives of Chinese communities across the globe, partnering with libraries, museums, and community organizations to preserve their collections for posterity.

Join us at the Malden Public Library for a presentation by Clean Water Action and the Mystic Valley NAACP on the status of lead piping here in Malden, the effects this has on our community, and how you can be part of the solution. Registration is not required but is requested.

New 8-Week English Conversation Class

We have changed the English Conversation Class to an 8-week class. The English Conversation Class meets on Wednesdays from 1:00-2:00pm. The class is no longer “drop-in.”
You are now required to register for this class. It is limited to 35 students. You will be placed on a waiting list for the next 8-week class in order of your registration (first come, first served).
The first 8-week session is from Wednesday, October 2, 2024–Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

Janet Applefield Author Talk

Massachusetts Cultural Council, she has spoken at hundreds of venues on
her experiences as a child hidden during the Holocaust and the importance
of standing up to bigotry and hate.

Janet Applefield will be at the Malden Public Library Monday September 23rd 6-7pm to discuss her book Becoming Janet. Books will be available for purchase at the event. Registration not required  but requested.
