New 8-Week English Conversation Class

We have changed the English Conversation Class to an 8-week class. The English Conversation Class meets on Wednesdays from 1:00-2:00pm. The class is no longer “drop-in.”
You are now required to register for this class. It is limited to 35 students. You will be placed on a waiting list for the next 8-week class in order of your registration (first come, first served).
The first 8-week session is from Wednesday, October 2, 2024–Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

Janet Applefield Author Talk

“Arriving in America in 1947, 12 year-old Gustawa Singer carried the heaviness of the three-year wartime separation from her father. Desperate to piece together their stolen years, he sat her down and meticulously transcribed her memories in a seven-page handwritten record. They never spoke about their collective torture again. Hidden in a basement for 35 years, this forgotten testimony became the blueprint for Singer Applefield’s journey of self-discovery.” From janetapplefield.com

Working with the non-profit, Facing History and Ourselves, and the
Massachusetts Cultural Council, she has spoken at hundreds of venues on
her experiences as a child hidden during the Holocaust and the importance
of standing up to bigotry and hate.

Janet Applefield will be at the Malden Public Library Monday September 23rd 6-7pm to discuss her book Becoming Janet. Books will be available for purchase at the event. Registration not required  but requested.

Malden Writers Collaborative Season 15

Join us for an information session about our local library writers’ group. Meet members, ask questions, get a sense of how our writers’ group supports current and aspiring writers. All abilities and styles are welcome! Information session begins at 7pm on Thursday the 19st and will conclude at 8:30pm.

Jellyfish – Pastel Workshop with Greg

Award-winning pastel artist Gregory John Maichack (http://gregorymaichack.com/) will present “Jellyfish,” a Zoom pastel
painting workshop for adults and teens 18+ hosted by the Malden Public Library on Monday September 30th, from 6-8pm. This
fun, two-hour workshop, with materials included, guides everyone from the sheer beginner to advanced participants in
producing their very own personalized and original pastel of a stunning jellyfish.

Participants will leave the workshop with their own 12 X 18 painting, all the supplied pastels, pencils, paper, blending
material, and photo references of various and sundry jellyfish for future painting.

Growing Up in Malden – A Memoir Marathon

Calling all readers, writers and history lovers. In honor of Malden’s 375th Anniversary, join us on Thursday, September 5 at the Malden Public Library for a marathon reading of Malden’s best published memoirs. We will be collectively reading aloud works of personal storytelling in two sessions – 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (daytime) and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (evening). Aspiring memoir writers are invited to share short excerpts from their own stories of childhood and teenage years. Or simple come to be inspired to begin to write your own story.

Works we will read aloud include: Childhood in the Old Parsonage by Darius Cobb, Linden on the Saugus Branch by Elliot Paul, Back Then: One Family’s Way of Life in the 1930’s and the 1940’s by John Bowman, Delightful Yesterdays by Emma Fall Schofield, and Monkey Corner: Life on the Outside Looking In by Jerry (Rocky) Romano.

Memoirs also have historical value. They provide insight into world events from the author’s perspective and allow us to understand what a person felt in a given time period. This event is part of the City of Malden’s 375th celebration, a year-long program that honors the rich history, vibrant culture, and resilient spirit of our City. Explore the Magic of the Fells

Friends of the Fells will be at the Malden Public Library to discuss how they help preserve the Fells and protect it for future generations. No registration required.

Our monthly online poetry discussion group is led by Somerville’s Poet Laureate Lloyd Schwartz.

Registration is required and the link to join is sent out the day before the event.

Meetings are held every other week on a variety of topics, such as cover letters, LinkedIn, networking, interview strategies, and more. 35 members of this group found new jobs in the first half of 2024! It is not required to attend the first meeting, or every meeting, and if you need help with Zoom, we are happy to assist you at the library.
