Young children are invited to join us for this special drop-in storytime program on Thursday, September 22, at 10:30 a.m. Malden Firefighter Bill Sullivan will read aloud a picture book and talk about fire safety and what firefighters do. No registration required. Recommended for ages 3 and up. Preschool groups are welcome, but please call 781-388-0803 in advance.

Welcoming Week is an annual campaign and celebration to showcase the movement of communities striving to be more welcoming places for all, including immigrants.

The Malden Public Library will be closed on Monday, September 5, 2022 in honor of Labor Day. We will reopen at 9 am on Tuesday, September 6th.
Our merit badges have arrived and they are very cool! If you miss your scout days, or you always wanted to be a scout but couldn’t then this is your chance to earn a merit badge. All you need to do is stop by the circulation desk with your completed summer reading passport. Or just let us know that you finished five challenges, in person or online, and we will award you a merit badge.
If you haven’t completed your challenges, you still have time. Stop by the library and pick up a passport. We’ll give you stickers for book reviews, funny jokes (not funny jokes), dances, and trips out into nature. Things are hard and we want to make this easy, so come in and get a badge for getting through another summer season intact. Celebrate with us!
And for adults, when you get your merit badge don’t forget to fill out an entry for our tote bag raffle. We have some nifty Camp MPL tote bags for a limit number of winners.

Zhezhi 摺紙, Chinese paper folding originated in the 15th century and remains a distinctive paper crafting tradition. Maying Soong’s The Art of Chinese Paper folding helped popularize the craft in the 20th century. Modular designs, such as utilized in this craft, derive from recent innovations popularized in the 1990s by artists among the Golden Venture migrants.
In 1993 the Cargo Ship Golden Venture ran aground in New York. On board were 286 Chinese refugees. Their imprisonment and subsequent years long legal dispute continues to be a point of contention in discussions on immigration policy, human rights, and statelessness.
The documentary Golden Venture (2006), directed by Peter Cohn, depicts the journey of some of the Gold Venture migrants lives from the 90s into the mid 2000s. This is available through the library’s Kanopy subscription. http://www.kanopy.com/en/boston/video/150093
Many of the pieces of art created by Golden Venture artists including Cao Xiang Qui and Zhe Shung Jan are now part of the Museum of Chinese in America’s collection exhibited in 1996 as “Fly to Freedom” and most recently in 2018 as FOLD. Due to a fire in January 2020, many of the pieces are in need of conservation and are no longer accessible to the public. We’ll supply the LEGO bricks, and children can have fun using their imaginations and creating their own LEGO projects on Tuesday, August 9, from 2:30 to 4:00 pm. Recommended for ages 5-10.
