Family Movie Night @ Park at Rivers Edge

Join us for a fun, free family movie night on The Park at Rivers Edge Great Lawn (adjacent to 200 River’s Edge Drive in Medford)! The Great Lawn section of the park will be transformed into an outdoor movie theater where residents and visitors of all ages are welcome to gather and enjoy a free movie night featuring “Back to the Future” (Rated PG).

The event is free and open to the public. Sponsored by Preotle, Lane & Associates and the Malden Public Library. Attendees should bring their own blankets and chairs for use. There will be free snacks and water provided. Wellington Station is just 0.4 miles from Rivers Edge. Free parking is available at the Rivers Edge Garage.

TONIGHT: Movie Night: Wed., June 26, 2024: 6:00-7:15pm

Join us for Movie Night on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 from 6:00-7:15pm. We will be showing a film by local filmmaker, Dante D’Amore, called Lightkeepers. This film is based on the true story of two sisters, Abigail and Rebecca Bates, who “fought off” the British troops during the war of 1812 by using a fife and drum. The film stars Kayla Caulfield, Lily Ayotte, and David Pridemore.

“During the War of 1812, two sisters at Scituate Lighthouse, armed only with a fife and drum, frightened away armed men of the British warship, La Hogue, fooling the British into thinking that an armed militia was on shore awaiting them.” Not Rated (60 min.) (2022)

Lightkeepers was filmed locally in Duxbury, Marshfield, Salem & Plymouth, Massachusetts.

YA Craft: Boba Tea Keychains

Young Adults in the 6th through 12th grade are invited to start your Summer with a young adult craft program, making your own Boba Tea Keychains.

Join us on Thursday June 13th, from 3:00-4:30 as we craft and enjoy a boba tea experience. Come and learn about the Summer Programs for teens at the library and get ready for our reading program as well.

Young Adult Movie Afternoon, Thurs. June 27th @3:00 PM

Young Adults are invited to the Malden Public Library on Thursday, June 27th for a movie afternoon from 3:00-5:00.

Join us in the Maccario Room as we watch the latest film in over an average of 80 years of films about Godzilla and King Kong. Light refreshments and shacks will be provided.

Library Closed Monday, May 27 in Observance of Memorial Day

The Malden Public Library will be closed on Monday, May 27th in honor of Memorial Day. We will reopen at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28th.

Rockabye Beats with Shon Gordon – Saturday, May 25, 11 a.m.

Sing, dance, and get a little loco! Rockabye Beats is more than just an entertaining music program for young children—it’s a place where friends are made and families grow closer by creating music together! Join us for some musical fun as Berklee-graduate Shon Gordon plays his guitar while subliminally teaching basic Spanish vocabulary. Appropriate for ages 2-6+.

This program, presented in coordination with the North Suburban Child & Family Resource Network, is supported by a grant from the Malden Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Summer Reading Kickoff!

NOTICE: Due to the expected high temperatures, the summer reading kickoff and ice cream social will now be held in the Malden Public High School cafeteria, directly across the street from the library.

It’s that time of year again! Come celebrate the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge Kickoff, here on the front lawn of the Malden Public Library! Featuring music by musician Steve Blunt, and ice cream treats from Dairy Delight. YA Model Kit Craft

Young Adults in the 5th through 12th grade are invited to the program room of the Malden Public Library to put together their own model kit, and learn all about the fun hobby.

Special Tour : Honoring the Legacy of Frank Stella 5.18.24

Saturday May 18th at 2pm, Library Director Dora St. Martin will offer a special tour of the Converse Galleries for International Museum Day. This year is especially significant because of the sad passing of Frank Stella, a former Maldonian and inovative artist. In honor of his contributions to art and to our Galleries the tour will focus on his work and its influences. . Stella was born and raised in Malden and the library has been fortunate to acquire several of his pieces. Please join us for this very special memorial tour honoring the legacy of this our very own Frank Stella.

Haitian Culture Night: Wed., May 15, 2024: 6:00-8:00pm

Please join us on Wednesday, May 15, 2024: 6:00-8:00pm at the Malden Public Library for our first Haitian Culture Night filled with Haitian art, poetry, music, language, and food.

Our featured guests include Haitian artists, Professor Joel Renfort and Martine Renfort, the poet Eudrelle G. Alexis Saint-Amand, Dean of Community, Culture and Equity, Malden Catholic and emcee for the night, Erga Pierrette, and a very special performance by Haitian singer and international performer, ADA.

Professor Joel Renfort, State University of Haiti (UEH) and Martine Renfort will talk about their artwork from Realism to Surrealism and about their Caribbean Artists Group, MAKÒS Art. In addition to their canvas paintings, the Renforts also paint on clothing (shirts, t-shirts, hats, etc.), on bottles, on bags, and wood. Joel and Martine Renfort will be exhibiting some of their artwork inside the main reading room of the Library during the month of May.

Poet and Malden Catholic student, Eudrelle G. Alexis Saint-Amand, will read her original poetry in Haitian-Creole and English. Eudrelle describes herself as a polyglot who is fluent in four languages and understands five languages. She started writing poetry when she was in the third grade. Her poetry is powerful and not to be missed.

Erga Pierrette (MSW, LCSW) is the Dean of Community, Culture and Equity at Malden Catholic and will read a piece about Haitian culture and emcee the event. Erga is well-known in the Malden community for her dedication to social justice issues and community organizing.

ADA (ADA Ayiti) was born in Paris, France to Haitian parents and has performed throughout Haiti, Miami, and the world. She sings in French, Haitian-Creole, and English and will be performing some of her favorite songs. Her performance is not to be missed.

On Haitian Culture Night we will have some samples of popular Haitian foods and you can start  learning Haitian-Creole with one of our language apps. Also, you can check out some books in Haitian-Creole for kids and adults and learn a little bit about Haiti and the country’s interesting historical connection to Malden, Massachusetts.
