Let’s Talk About A Poem with Lloyd Schwartz returns on Sept 14, 2024.   This month features the poem “Among School Children” by William Butler Yeats.

Our monthly online poetry discussion group is led by Somerville’s Poet Laureate Lloyd Schwartz.

Registration is required and the link to join is sent out the day before the event.

Mystic River for All! Mystic Valley Watershed Association

Thursday, Aug. 8th at 6pm! The Mystic Valley Watershed Association will be coming by to talk about the Malden River as a part of the Mystic Valley Watershed, and how a healthy environment and access to nature can benefit our community as a whole! Fire Safety with Firefighter Sara

This Friday, Aug. 9th, 10:30-11:30am! Join us with Firefighter Sara to learn about fire safety, and to celebrate the 80th birthday of Smokey Bear! This program is located in the Children’s Room, and recommended for ages 4 and up. No registration is required.

NASA @ My Library Take-Home Art Craft

Youth and Young Adults that have signed up for our Summer Reading Program are welcome to the library today, Monday August 5th to pick up a NASA @ My Library take home art bag! The August theme for NASA’s Science Place for creating original artwork is about the ASTHROS mission to Antarctica, and you can find out more about it here.

The craft kit includes a small paint brush, watercolors, canvas and eraser, as well as some fun bookmarks, postcards and a sticker from NASA. Paint your masterpiece and submit it to the Science Place website to have your original art featured on the website here.

These take home arts kits are limited to one bag per household, for only 3rd graders through 12th graders only, and you must be signed up for the Summer Reading program in order to take a bag home with you. No other sign-up is required and the kits are first come first serve starting today, so stop by the library when you have a chance and blast off into space.

Pumpernickel Puppets Performance!

Pumpernickel Puppets will be performing Monday, August 5th, 3-3:45pm in the Maccario Room! This free performance will include “Three Billy Goats Gruff,” and “The Lion and the Mouse,” as well as a demonstration of how puppets work. Recommended for children ages 3 and up, and no registration required. This program is generously funded by Preotle, Lane & Associates, Ltd.

Young Adult Ocean Slime Craft – Thurs. Aug 15th @ 3PM

Young Adults in the 6th through 12th grade are invited to the Malden Public Library on Thursday, August 15th from 3:00-4:30 PM to make their very own Oceanic themed slime.

Arthropod Petting Zoo

Future entomologists, get ready to bug out at the Arthropod Petting Zoo, hosted by Professor Bugman! Come learn how these amazingly diverse animals have adapted to survive and thrive in a bug-eat-bug world. This Thursday, Aug. 1, 3-4pm in the Maccario Room! (Recommended for ages 4-11 years old, no registration necessary.)

Linda Dolph – Artist Reception

Artwork by Linda Dolph will be featured throughout the month of August and the Library will be hosting an artist reception on Thursday August 1st from 6-7pm.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Seen and Unseen

Linda Dolph has an extensive background in art through teaching, studying and her own artistic expression.  Photography is an every day thing, capturing images of animals, plants, trees and all elements of nature. These are the things that are SEEN with our earthly eyes. She considers the natural world her “Spiritual Temple” and draws life and breath from experiencing and interacting with the earth and creatures around her.

Inspired by earth’s abundance, a new approach to art principals, her imagination and studies in Shamanism she is employing digital collage as a way to integrate monotypes and images with an eye toward whimsy, the spiritual and the mythical, manifesting “Beings” that she likes to think populate UNSEEN worlds.

Summer Reading Prize Week 4

Summer Reading Week 4 means a tasty new prize for kids and teens who have logged their reading minutes: a free, small ice cream with one topping from Monkey King Tea! Monkey King Tea is located at 249 Highland Ave. in Malden, and you can check out their website HERE.

Once you’ve logged your minutes in Beanstack, you can pick up your certificate at either the Information desk (for Teens) or the children’s desk (for kids in 5th grade or younger).

If you haven’t registered for summer reading yet, it’s not too late! Sign up on our Beanstack site HERE or via the Beanstack app on your phone, and you can backlog your previous weeks’ reading minutes (honest estimates are okay)!
