NASA @ My Library Take & Make “Ocean Biome Dessert”

Youth and Families are invited to explore the Ocean’s Exploration with a Take & Make bag at home, sponsored by our partnership with NASA @ My Library.
 
Please call the Library at 781-324-0218 and ask for the Information Desk, or stop by the Information Desk of the Library to reserve your single craft bag per household. Sign-ups start today, and you can pick up your reserved bag starting Tuesday, July 5th, at the MPL.
 
Each bag has the dessert fixings to create a jello aquarium and explore the the Water Cycle of planet Earth. These kits are limited to one per household as each one will make 8 servings of dessert! Have fun learning and playing with your food in the comfort of your own home.

Diane Edgecomb, Storyteller – Thursday, July 7, 10:30am

Children ages 4-8 are invited to “Trail Mix,” a special storytelling program by Diane Edgecomb on Thursday, July 7, at 10:30 am on the front lawn of the library.

Step off the Beaten Path and into the Big Outdoors in this fun-loving participatory program with award-winning storyteller Diane Edgecomb. We’ll go on a fossil dig in Montana to discover a new dinosaur and take on the world’s sassiest bugs all before we break out our lunch pails. Join in the stories, songs and FUN that have made Diane Edgecomb one of New England’s favorite storytellers. Diane has been featured on NPR and is a winner of a Parent’s Choice award for her CDs and recordings.

This program is supported by a grant from the Malden Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

 

Worm Storytime & Gardening Activity – Tuesday, June 28, 3pm

Kari Percival, Malden artist and author, will read from her new picture book, How to Say Hello to a Worm, and then offer a special gardening activity on the library front lawn. This free program is appropriate for young children (ages 2-5).  For the activity, families should bring a container in which to plant their garden. Suitable containers can be an empty 32-ounce yogurt container (with lid) or an empty plastic half-gallon milk jug or an empty 2-liter soda bottle or a similar-sized flower pot.

Book Sale Saturday, June 11

Join the Friends of the Malden Public Library for a book sale on Saturday, June 11th from 11 am to 1 pm. The sale will be held rain or shine in the Library’s Book Sale Room.  Books, DVDs, and CDs for all ages are available with prices ranging from $.25 to $2.00.

Come Explore the Healing Power of Art

On Tuesday, June 21 at 6:30 p.m., the Malden Public Library is proud to present Art-Prescriptions, a talk on museum-based art therapy, wellness and social inclusion with Stephen Legari, Program Officer for Art Therapy at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal, Quebec.

Stephen Legari holds a master’s in creative arts therapies from Concordia University and a master’s in couple and family therapy from McGill University. He has worked extensively with individuals, groups, couples, and families in both clinical and non-clinical settings. Since 2017, Stephen has been Program Officer for Art Therapy at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts where he has developed specialized therapy programs for groups and contributed to numerous publications on the arts in health. Stephen works with Canada’s Social Prescribing program–which empowers doctors to prescribe free art museum visits to patients with a range of ailments, from depression to diabetes to chronic illnesses.

Beginning at 6 p.m., there will be a pre-program hands-on (30 minute) wellness workshop in the art galleries. Using simple tape and some acrylic paint, participants will be able to create their own “crafty emotional coaster” to express their feelings and be inspired by the library’s beautiful art collections.

Classic Movie Night: Wed., June 15th: 6-8pm

Join us on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at 6-8:00pm in the Program Room. It’s throwback Classic Movie Night!

This classic Al Pacino film is “The story of a botched bank robbery that occurred August 22, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York and turned into a bizarre hostage situation lasting” throughout a sweltering “Dog Day Afternoon.” Rated R (124 min.) (1975)

YA Movie Afternoon – June 16th @ 3PM

Young Adults in the 5th through 12th grade are invited to watch a movie at the Malden Public Library. Join us on Thursday, June 16th from 3-5 PM in the Program Room on the 2nd Floor.

The film is a high-flying action adventure movie based on the “Uncharted” video game series, and it stars Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Far From Home) and Mark Wahlberg.

Light refreshments and snacks will be provided on a first come basis along with seating so mark the 3PM start time to enjoy this feature presentation at the MPL.

The Living Art of Bonsai: A Talk with Michael Levin of Bonsai West

On Tuesday, June 7 at 6:30 p.m., the Malden Public Library is proud to present Michael Levin, founder and proprietor of Bonsai West of Littleton.  Michael will present beautiful bonsai works from his collection and demonstrate the amazing “art of bonsai.” The program will be held in the lovely 1885 Converse Memorial Building (36 Salem Street, Malden, MA)

Michael Levin is founder of Bonsai West, one of the country’s largest bonsai nurseries. Since 1982 Michael has worked to build a place that attracts bonsai lovers and plant people from around the world.  Bonsai West is a magical place for sure and everyone who visits feels the power of the trees and that certain beauty that is unique and hard to find in our commercial world. https://bonsaiwest.com/

The Bonsai West collection consist of many original works from the first generation of Japanese American Bonsai artists.  Michael was lucky enough to meet this small group of artists many who went into gardening as the only work they could find after being released from the Japanese internment camps in the late 1940’s. Michael has an interesting way of weaving their stories with his own experiences in the growth of American Bonsai.
