SUNPRINTS: ART WITH THE POWER OF THE SUN

Wednesday, July 22 ~ 6:00 – 6:45 p.m

Learn about print making and then create your work of art using the sun printing process. Free and open to all ages. Program will be followed by the Live on the Lawn Concert Series at 7 p.m.

What is STEAM? STEAM learning is an approach to education that emphasizes the role of arts and design in the learning process for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Many educators believe that the addition of the arts to traditional STEM can bring the important skills of creativity, ingenuity, and innovation into the learning experience.

STEAM in the Art Gallery is brought to you with federal funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners

Summer Concert Featuring Four Guys in Tuxes

The Malden Public Library’s “Live on the Lawn” Summer Concert Series continues on Wednesday, July 22, at 7:00 pm featuring the band Four Guys in Tuxes. This group’s versatility and energy makes for great entertainment with its performance of jazz, swing, rock and blues songs.  Requests will be encouraged and be sure to wear your dancing shoes because you will be dancing and singing along with this talented group of performers.

Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and experience a great night of outdoor live music at the Malden Public Library (36 Salem Street). Grab a spot on the lawn and enjoy some great entertainment!

The Live on the Lawn Series continues throughout the summer.  All concerts are free and sponsored by the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, with additional support from the Friends of the Malden Public Library. Young Adult Comic Book Collages

Teens in the 6th grade and up, comic book enthusiasts, and art fans: join us for our Comic Book Collage Art Program. On Tuesday, July 21st from 3:00-5:00 PM join us as we cut, arrange and paste old comic books into beautiful new pieces of art.

We will meet in the Program Room on the 2nd floor of the library, and you don’t need to bring anything except your favorite DC or Marvel comics superhero. Supplies and funding for this program is brought to you by Preotle, Lane & Associates.Mike-Alcantara_web2

Diane Edgecomb, Award-winning Storyteller

On Thursday, July 16, at 3:00 p.m., Diane Edgecomb will tell marvelous stories about “Superheroes Around the World.” People in all countries tell folktales about superheroes with amazing powers! Celebrate our common love of story by coming to hear these exciting and engaging multicultural tales. Recommended for children, ages 4-11.

This program is supported by a grant from the Malden Cultural Council, a local agency, which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Young Adult Anime Club

akiraTeens in the 6th Grade and up experience this Summer’s first Anime Club meeting. We will watch episodes of shows like ‘Naruto‘ or ‘Attack on Titan‘, or maybe even a film such as ‘Akira‘ or ‘Paprika‘.

 

We will meet in the Maccario Room on Friday, July 17th from 3:00 – 5:00 PM. Light refreshments and snacks will be available. If you have a favorite manga series feel free to check it out and bring it to the meeting.

Converse LEGO Club

 

Teens in the 5th Grade and up can come and enjoy our Summer Converse LEGO club. The third meeting will be Thursday, August 6th from 3-5 pm. The club meeting will be located in our Program Room on the 2nd floor of the library. Bring your imagination and build something extraordinary!

Summer Fun – Jewelry Making — Bracelet

Monday, July 27th from 6-8:30 pm.

Learn to make your own elegant bracelet with Cathy Bartlett, a member of our children’s room staff. Through this fun class, Cathy will guide you through the whole process from start to finish of how to make simple but beautiful pieces of jewelry that you can wear with pride.

Summer fun – Hair Braiding

Tuesday, August 4th, 6 – 8:30 pm

If you are looking for a fun night out, come join licensed hair stylist Brittany Judkins for a hair braiding class.  Brittany will teach different styles of braids and show tips on how you can improve your techniques.

Just bring a partner.  Elastics, ribbons, bows, and all supplies are provided by the Malden Public Library free of charge.

Teen Summer Movie

Young Adults in the 6th grade and up are welcome to join us on Thursday, July 2nd from 3:00 to 5:00 PM in the Maccario Room to watch a film based on a Marvel Comic Book called “Big Hero Six“.  The story involves protagonist Hiro and his behemoth friend Baymax as they team up to stop villains and rogues in Japan, alongside his super-powered friends. The animated feature film has won many awards, including an Oscar for best animated feature.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided. Door prizes include Marvel comics provided by “New England Comics” here in Malden, with funding from Preotle, Lane & Associates LTD.

Young Adult Summer Reading Kick-Off Party
