Introduction to Genealogy

Interested in getting into genealogy but don’t know where to start? The Malden Public Library will be hosting Seema Kenney from the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists, she will present a 90-minute workshop geared toward beginners. About our presenter: Seema Kenney. A wife, mother of 3, and entrepreneur, Seema is an experienced software instructor and a professional genealogist. Based on over 20 years of research, her known roots are deep in New England as well as England, Germany, & Sweden with DNA adding a line in The Netherlands. She has a certificate in Genealogical Research from BU, completed ProGen and is an active member of several societies and part of the NERGC planning committee. Seema is also certified as a Guided Autobiography Consultant and a Legacy Planner.

Photographer, documentarian, and naturalist Robert Michelson will be at the Malden Public Library leading ‘Digital Photography and Video Using Your Smart Device’ on Tuesday May 17th from 3-5 pm. In this workshop, participants will learn best practices in taking, editing, organizing photos and videos, and creating digital slide shows to post to social media.

 

Robert Michelson’s work has appeared in National Geographic, Natural History, and Field & Stream along with dozens of other national and regional publications. He has produced several award nominated and winning documentaries and short form videos. The NOAA presented Michelson with an Environmental Hero Award for life-long efforts in educating the public about the diversity of marine life found off the coast of new England. Mr. Michelson has a company called Photography by Michelson, Inc.

Join us Tuesday, April 26th at 4 pm for an Art & Poetry Workshop. Jerry Beck of the Revolving Museum invites people ages 6–90+ to create original art and poetry. The finished works will be shown on the Revolving Museum in the Summer of 2022.

Light refreshments will be served.

Learn how we can build a stronger community through theater.

This free hands on workshop will be teaching basic theater skills as a way to promote story sharing among Malden’s varied communities. It is offered to adults and teenagers 13+. People without and with theater experience are equally encouraged to participate. Folks who might be interested in story telling, theater, or maybe just a place to practice communicating after the last two years of Covid. This workshop is being led by instructors from Harvard’s American Repertory Theater.

Bring a city’s characters to life

The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University, is dedicated to creating a meaningful dialogue with our communities outside of our theaters. Our goal with these workshops is to create a stronger community by collaborating with our audiences and students. In collaboration with Malden Public Library, artists from the A.R.T.’s Education and Engagement Team will offer their craft and teaching to our community through a series of theatrical classes. The goal of these classes is to build a stronger community, and help individuals to tap on their own creative voice in relations with others.

TONIGHT: Malden Reads: Book Discussion With Mayor Gary Christenson: Wed., April 13th 7-8pm

The Malden Public Library is proud to host our annual Malden Reads Book Discussion with Malden Mayor Gary Christenson. The event will be held on Wednesday, April 13th from 7–8 pm in the Ryder Gallery of the Converse Art Museum at Malden Public Library. Light refreshments will be available beforehand.

This year, Malden Reads has selected a collection of poems for the first time ever. Our 2022 season book selection is An American Sunrise by Joy Harjo. For those who don’t prefer poetry, we ask that you give this collection a chance. Poetry is meant to be heard, absorbed, and reflected on, and we are all thrilled for the opportunity to do so.

An American Sunrise deals with loss, memory, and the nature of joy and hope. The collection also explores human rights and socio-political equity across American cultures and communities (which is especially relevant to our diverse city of Malden), the values of various indigenous peoples, and the importance of our land and environment.

Our book discussion this year will begin with one of the poems in the collection called For Those Who Would Govern. So join us for an evening of sharing poetry, ideas, art, and joy of gathering with our neighbors.

National Library Week 2022

National Library Week is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities. National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association.

“Connect with Your Library” spotlights libraries as places to get connected to the internet, use computers, and access other technology resources. It reinforces the idea that libraries are places to connect with media, programs, ideas—and, of course, books! Likewise, libraries connect communities to each other!

“Moments in Creativity” ~ A Talk with Artist Gale Fulton Ross

Nationally renowned artist Gale Fulton Ross will explore creative inspirations in a gallery talk on Tuesday, April 12 at 1 p.m.  The talk will be followed by the opening of the Converse Galleries’ newest exhibition: Modern Sojourner / Sojourner Truth’s Malden.  

Registration is required for the talk and light luncheon. Spaces are limited. To register call the Library at 781-324-0218. The exhibition runs through May 31, 2022.

Gale Fulton Ross was raised in Malden, the oldest of nine children. Fulton Ross displayed an aptitude for art at a very young age, which was nurtured by her father Herman Fulton, himself an accomplished but unheralded automobile designer. Gale studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, where she explored a wide variety of styles and media including sculpture. She also attended the California College of Arts and Crafts in San Francisco, concentrating in the study of Fine Arts and Art History. In addition to college training she studied under the guidance of established artists, including Melvin Johnson, at the Vesper George School of Art, Boston; Cleveland Bellow, of the DeYoung Museum, San Francisco, California; and Pierre Parsus, of France. The Malden Public Library is honored to have three other works by Ms. Fulton Ross in the permanent collection.

Early in her career, Fulton Ross traveled extensively throughout Africa, Europe, and as far east as China, in order to study and paint. Fulton Ross cites several modern-day African-American masters as influences on her work, primarily Charles White, Elizabeth Catlett, Samella Lewis, and Beauford Delaney, as well as the classical masters Michelangelo, DaVinci, and Rembrandt. Her work incorporates both the figurative and the abstract.  She has become a highly regarded portrait artist whose portfolio includes commissions for many leading professionals, celebrities and politicians. Among them are Archbishop Desmond Tutu; Justice Thurgood Marshall; Governors Michael Dukakis and L. Douglas Wilder; author and activist James Baldwin; and pro athletes Jackie Robinson and Arthur Ashe.  Currently Gale Fulton Ross continues to create, driven by the passion of her life. She works from her studios in Camarillo, California and Sarasota, Florida.

Family Movie Night: Wed., March 30th: 6:00-8:00pm

Welcome back to in-person Movie Night! Join us for Family Movie Night on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 from 6:00-8:00pm. We will be showing Disney’s blockbuster and enchanting film about Encanto, featuring the music of Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film is nominated for three Oscars, including Best Animated Feature Film.
