New Museum Passes!

We are pleased to announce that the Malden Public Library now provides the following new discount museum passes to Malden Residents:

Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA): Each pass admits 2 adults for $5 per person. Children are free.

Edward M. Kennedy Institute: Each pass admits 2 adults for $7 per person. Children are free.

Coming Soon! John F. Kennedy Library & Museum Each pass admits 2 people at $3 per person. Children 12 and under are free.

Children up through Grade 5

Children who read at least 120 minutes per week may come in the following week to pick up a prize.

Teens Entering Grades 6-12

Teens who read at least 5 hours a week may come in the following week to pick up a prize. There will also be prizes for teens who read the most!

Adults 18+

This year, adults can play Library Bingo! Adults who complete five squares in a row  may come in to pick up a prize. Adults who fill the whole card will be entered in a raffle to win a gift card. Pick up your card at the library.

Board Game Night for Adults – June 8th

Please join us Wednesday, June 8th in the Program Room from 6:30-8:30 PM for Board Game Night for Adults.

Bring your own board games, or play with the library’s collection that includes: Settlers of Catan, Ticket To Ride, Dominion, Pandemic, Forbidden Island and more! Snacks and Refreshments will be served.

Poetry Readings: Robert Carr & Cammy Thomas ~ June 14

Robert Carr will be launching a new collection of poetry “Amaranth”, published by Indolent Books, at the Malden Public Library on June 14, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. You can preview Bob’s work at robertcarr.org.

Cammy Thomas, author of Cathedral of Wish and Inscriptions, Four Way Books, will be opening this evening of  poetry where her books will also be available. Please join us for this special local author event.

 

CD Collins reads from her novel Afterheat

Join us for a reading by author CD Collins on Wednesday, June 15, at 6:30 p.m.  Kentucky native CD Collins follows the storytelling traditions of the South, both as a solo artist and when accompanied by musicians. As one of originators of the early ‘90s resurgence of spoken-word with live music, her work has been archived in award-winning compact discs: Kentucky Stories, Subtracting Down and Carousel Lounge.

Collins’ fiction has appeared in numerous literary magazines, including The Drum, StoryQuarterly, Salamander, Phoebe and The Pennsylvania Review. Her collection of poetry, Self-Portrait with Severed Head, was published by Ibbetson Street press in 2009. Her collection of short stories, Blue Land, was released in June 2010. Her novel, Afterheat, has just been published.

She has produced a short lyric documentary that chronicles the catastrophic steps of mountaintop removal to retrieve Appalachian coal. She has recently completed a novel and is currently working on a one-woman show. With her band Rockabetty, she has completed her fourth album, Clean Coal Big Lie. She is currently releasing this album in a series of performances

Memorial Day Observation—Library Closed Monday, May 30

The Malden Public Library will be closed on Monday, May 30th in honor of Memorial Day. We will reopen at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31st.

The Finest Hours: An Evening with Author Michael Tougias

Join us on Wednesday, May 25th at 7 pm, as best-selling author Michael Tougias presents a narrated, gripping presentation of the dramatic true story of a 1952 nor’easter that left dozens of men aboard a pair of oil tankers at the mercy of a deadly storm and the U.S. Coast Guard rescue mission to save them. The talk will include slides of the actual rescue.

Michael J. Tougias is a lecturer and award-winning author and co-author of 24 books. He is best known for his seven survival at sea books including A Storm Too Soon, So Close To Home, and The Finest Hours now a major motion picture by Disney. His book, Ten Hours Until Dawn: The True Story of Heroism and Tragedy Aboard the Can Do in the Blizzard of 78, was selected by the American Library Association as one of the “Top Books of the Year” and described as “a white-knuckle read, the best book of its kind.”  Co-sponsored by Malden Reads and the Malden Historical Society

Drop-in Stitch Will Return in the Fall

Thank you to everyone that made our Drop-In Stitch so much fun. It was a place to bring your projects, meet new people, share your skills and learn from your neighbors.

We will be taking the summer off (Thursday evenings in the summer the Library closes at 6) but will resume in the Fall. Check back here for details soon.

6th Annual Public Reading Thursday, May 26th at 7PM

WritingGroup2016FlyerJoin the Malden Public Library in celebrating the talents of The Malden Writers’ Collaborative on Thursday, May 26th at 7 p.m. Seven members will share original works of fiction and nonfiction, on relationships, socioeconomics, death, journeys, nature, war, fantasy, and much more!

The Malden Writers’ Collaborative is a creative writing group that meets biweekly at the Malden Public Library. They focus on developing as writers through sharing their own work and critiquing the work of others.

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided through the generous support of the Friends of the Malden Public Library. Call the library at 781-324-0218 with any questions.

Tickets Selling Fast for the 14th Annual Wine Tasting

May 6th is approaching quickly. Don’t wait to get your tickets to the 14th Annual Wine Tasting, hosted by the Friends of the Malden Public Library and M&M Liquors. The event will be held on Friday, May 6, 2016 from 7–10 pm in the historic galleries of the Malden Public Library. Tickets are $35 per person and will include wines from around the world, delicious hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and a chocolate fountain donated by Malden restaurants, and guided tours of the Library’s art and architecture.
