World Movie Night: Wed, May 21st: 6:00-8:30pm

Please join us for World Movie Night on Wednesday, May 21, 2025: 6:00-8:30pm at the Malden Public Library. We will be showing a movie based on the bestselling Brazilian memoir, Ainda Estou Aqui, (I’m Still Here), about the life of Marcelo Rubens Paiva. The film stars Fernanada Torres, Selton Mello, and Fernanda Montenegro. The movie won an Oscar this year for Best International Feature Film and Fernanda Torres won a Golden Globe for Best Actress

“While Brazil faces the tightening grip of a military dictatorship, Eunice Paiva, a mother of five, is forced to reinvent herself and her family, resisting the oppression that hangs over the country. This film is one of the best of the year and not to be missed.

Pride Screening: Gen Silent 6.4.25

The Malden Public Library in conjunction with the City of Malden, Councillor Ari Taylor, the Malden office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Malden Pride Coalition will have a special screening of Gen Silent in honor of Pride month. On Wednesday, June 4th at 6pm, at the library, we will show this very important documentary about LGBTQIA+ elders and the hurdles they face as they navigate later life care and medical concerns. Gen Silent follows the lives of 6 seniors in and around Boston who are trying to navigate aging and care in a system that is often hostile or at a minimum not equipped to embrace and support their needs.

Join us for this very important film and share your perspectives with our community. Elder care is an issue that each of us will have to face in some form. But for our queer elders that can be even more daunting. SAGE Advocacy and services for LGBTQ+ Elders provides some startling figures facing the community. “53% of LGBTQ+ older people report feeling isolated from others. 50% of all Americans living with HIV are over 50 years old. 65% of older transgender respondents felt there would be limited access to care as they aged… 55% from the same 2015 national survey feared they would be denied medical treatment. 70% of LGBTQ+ elders fear having to “re-closet” themselves when seeking elder housing. 41% of LGBTQ+ older people report having a disability, compared to 35 percent of heterosexual older adults.” With these figures it is essential to have conversations around what we can do to better support people in our neighborhood, family, and systemically through government support.

Following the screening there will be a discussion and light refreshments. There will also be representatives from Mystic Valley Elder Services and the Wicked Queer Film festival there to join the discussion. And for those who wish to learn more about services available for themselves and elders in their community we’ll also have in information table with materials from local organizations and a book list for further reading.

Please join us for Movie Night on Wednesday, April 23, 2025: 6:00-8:00pm at the Malden Public Library. We will be showing a movie written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg about A Real Pain. The film stars Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin. Kulkin recently won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Malden Reads Film Screening & Discussion: Wed., March 26th:6:00-8:00pm

Please join us for the Malden Reads Film Screening and discussion about William And The Windmill. We will be showing this film at the Malden Public Library on Wednesday, March 26, 2025: 6:00-8:00pm. This documentary explores the life of William Kamkwamba, author of the book, The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind, Malden Reads’ 2025 selection.

“With only a library book as his guide, 14-year-old William Kamkwamba builds a windmill in his Malawian village that changes his life forever. Using junk parts and an inexhaustible imagination, he harnesses enough energy to power a generator that saves his family from famine and resuscitates his dying farming community. Join us for Movie Night on Thursday, February 13, 2025: 5:30-8:15pm at the Malden Public Library. We will be showing a movie based on the bestselling novel, Wicked, by Gregory Maguire. The film stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, and Bowen Yang. This movie was just nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
