Coffee, Cookies & Conversation: Sat., Sept. 16th: 10-11am (Welcoming Week)

Please join us for our first “Coffee, Cookies, and Conversation” event for our annual Welcoming Week (September 8-17, 2023). Meet your neighbors in a casual setting, for a cup of coffee, some cookies, and relaxed conversation.

Welcoming Week is a global campaign that connects neighbors of all backgrounds in their communities. At the Malden Public Library we celebrate the values that unite us as immigrants, refugees, and non-immigrants.

Movie Night: Wed., September 20, 2023: 6:00-8:00pm

Join us for Movie Night on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 from 6:00-8:00pm. We will be showing a recent and excellent South Korean film about “Past Lives,” which features the immigrant experience and outstanding performances by Greta Lee and Teo Yoo.

“Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrest apart after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea. Two decades later, they are reunited in New York for one fateful week as they confront notions of destiny, love, and the choices that make a life, in this heartrending modern romance.” Rated PG-13 (106 min.) Welcoming Week: September 8-17, 2023

Join us at the Malden Public Library for Welcoming Week on September 8-17, 2023. Celebrated in communities around the globe, Welcoming Week is an annual campaign that connects neighbors of all backgrounds through community-informed activities and events. Welcoming Week provides communities the opportunity to publicly proclaim welcoming values, foster a mutual understanding between immigrants and non-immigrants, and build a deeper sense of belonging for all.

Throughout Welcoming Week we will provide information about local community organizations, including resources for English classes, immigration & citizenship information, food & housing information, and more. We will also have some craft kits available.

This year we will have a special event on Saturday, September 16, 2023: 10:00-11:00am for “Coffee, Cookies, and Conversation.” Meet your neighbors in a relaxed environment for a cup of coffee and great conversation!

And don’t miss our Movie Night on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, from 6:00-8:00pm. We will be showing a recent and excellent South Korean film about “Past Lives,” which features the immigrant experience and outstanding performances by Greta Lee and Teo Yoo. Summer Movie Night: Wed., August 16th: 6:00-8:30pm

Join us for Summer Movie Night on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 from 6:00-8:30pm at the Malden Public Library. We will be showing the newest movie based on Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3.

“Still reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill rallies his team to defend the universe and one of their own – a mission that could mean the end of the Guardians if not successful.” Rated PG-13 (149 min.) (2023)

We will have a fun movie-themed raffle. Free snacks will be provided. Movie times are approximate.

The previously scheduled film about Chevalier is postponed to a future date due to a change in the release date.

Audience warning: Guardians of the Galaxy 3: This film is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, and strong thematic elements. The film shows some instances of animal testing that may be disturbing or triggering for some viewers, especially young children.

PeTA (People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals) has issued a statement: the film “tells a beautiful and compassionate story about testing on animals to a Marvel-size audience” and it also “open[s] moviegoers’ eyes to the horrors of animal testing.”

Join us for Movie Night on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 from 6:00-8:00pm. We will be showing a movie about a life-like robot, named M3GAN, whose AI becomes a little too intelligent.

“When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady, Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems-a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.” Rated PG-13 (104 min.) MassHealth requires all members to renew this year. If you have MassHealth scan the QR code so you know what to expect.

Mystic Valley Elder Services (MVES) will be at the Malden Public Library to discuss how to renew your health benefits through MassHealth. You do not need to make an appointment and the open–question format is available to everyone, regardless of age. Drop by the Library at one of the times listed below to talk with MVES:

June 1, 2023: 1:00-3:00pm (Thursday)

June 15, 2023: 3:00-5:00pm (Thursday)

July 13, 2023: 1:00-3:00pm (Tuesday)

The Library will also have in-person materials provided by Mystic Valley Elder Services, including additional translations of the MassHealth renewal information flyers in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Portuguese, and Haitian-Creole. Friends Spring Book Sale: May 5th (Preview) & May 6th (Books & Coffee!!)

The Spring Book Sale is here! On Friday, May 5th from 6-9pm, if you join the Friends of the Malden Public Library you will have early access to the best books.

Membership is a bargain: $10 (students & seniors), $15 (individual), or $30 (family). Books, DVDs, CDs and more range in price from $0.25 to $2.00.

Don’t miss the Main Book Sale on Saturday, May 6th from 10am-2pm. We have a special surprise: Coffee and a Book—the Perfect Blend!

Malden’s own New England Coffee Company will be here serving up amazing coffee in exchange for a donation to the Friends. All proceeds benefit the Friends and the Malden Public Library.

Your membership in the Friends helps support Malden Public Library in providing free programs, discount museum passes, movie nights, children’s programs, language learning apps, concerts, and more for the Malden community.
