Friends Annual Book Sale—May 3 and 4

It’s moved! The Friends of the Malden Public Library are holding their annual book sale in the Spring this year.

Join us on Friday, May 3rd from 6–9 pm (Friends Preview Sale) and Saturday, May 4th from 10 am to 4 pm. Thousands of books to choose from for adults, teens, and children. Hardcover books are $1, paperbacks $.50, and children’s books $.25 or 5/$1.

It’s easy to join the Friends and you can do it on the evening of May 3rd. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Movie Night: Wed., May 15th: 6:00-8:00pm

Join us for Movie Night on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, from 6:00-8:00pm at the Malden Public Library.  We will be showing a recent movie based on the classic James Baldwin novel, If Beale Street Could Talk.  The movie stars Regina King, Kiki Layne, and Stephan James and is directed by Oscar-winning director, Barry Jenkins.

This adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel is “a timeless love story set in early 1970s Harlem involving newly engaged nineteen-year- old Tish and her fiance Fonny who have a beautiful future ahead. But their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit. Now the pair and their families must fight for justice in the name of love and the promise of the American dream.”

The Washington Post writes that “Jenkins has made an absolutely gorgeous movie.”  Rolling Stone calls it “of the moment and timeless all at once.”  Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 95% approval rating.

Art Night: New Works/New Acquisitions – Frank Stella and More

Did you know the Malden Public Library has acquired several exciting new works of art in the last few months? On Wednesday, April 17th, explore these amazing art works and the beautiful 1885 Converse Memorial Building.  The curated tour will include new acquisitions by artists Frank Stella, Stanley Woodward, Marguerite Pearson, Nicole Wittenberg and more.  The tour will begin promptly at 6 p.m.  The event is free but limited to 25.  Register by calling 781-324-0218.

Malden Reads: Skype with Lisa See

Join us on April 23 from 6:45-8:00 pm here at the Malden Public Library for a discussion with the author of this years’ Malden Reads selection The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane. Tea from MEM Tea and light refreshments will be served at 6:45 and the Skype with the author starts at 7:15.

Libraries = Strong Communities = National Library Week

National Library Week (April 7- 13, 2019) is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and library workers and to promote library use and support. From free access to books and online resources for families to library business centers that help support entrepreneurship and retraining, libraries offer opportunity to all. The theme for 2019 National Library Week is “Libraries = Strong Communities,” and  Gates Foundation Co-founder Melinda Gates will serve as 2019 National Library Week Honorary Chair.   First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and observed in libraries across the country each April.

Thursday, April 25 7PM Author Talk with Jack Kelly III & Paul Hammersley

Sharp Needle is an autobiographical account of Jack Kelly’s tragic spiral into heroin addiction, recovery and running for office, in the cutthroat world of Boston Politics. After sustaining a significant shoulder injury Jack was prescribed opiate pain meds and became addicted. Quickly, Jack descended into the sordid life of heroin that ultimately lead to homelessness and the loss of his family. But at the age of 22, Jack found recovery and battled his way back.

Jack has advised and served on various boards for public health policy and substance use disorder. He founded a mobile app tech startup, connecting people in recovery to one another from their phones. Jack remains a vocal leader on issues surrounding addiction and recovery.

Paul Hammersley, Malden’s Addiction Recovery Resource Specialist, serves to help residents navigate the treatment system, promote recovery, help to remove barriers, connect people with recovery support services and also encourage hope, optimism and promote healthy living.
Paul is a recovery and empowerment specialist and is also a Certified Addiction Recovery Coach who guides people through the process while supporting recovery based choices, goals, and decisions.

Books will be available for purchase.
This event is free and open to the public.
