Movie Night: Wed., May 24, 2017: 6:00-8:15pm

Join us for Movie Night on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, from 6:00-8:15pm.  We will be showing a recent movie based on the bestselling book, Hidden Figures, by Margot Lee Shetterly.  The film stars Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae, Kevin Costner, and Mahershala Ali.

In the 1960s, as the United States rushes to put a man in space before Russia, a group of three brilliant African-American women mathematicians working at NASA cross gender, race, and professional lines to help carry off one of the greatest operations—to put astronaut John Glenn into space.  The movie is based on the lives of Dorothy Vaughan (Spencer), Mary Jackson (Monae), and Katherine Johnson (Henson).

Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 93% approval rating and USA Today writes, “Adding social issues to its many inspirational themes, [the movie] equals one satisfying slice of history that’ll will entertain adults as well as kids looking to the stars.”  Variety adds, “[The film] is empowerment cinema.”  The Tribune News Service writes that the movie is “an assertion of humanity and civil rights that is pure cinematic nourishment for the soul.”
