Join us for Movie Night on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, from 6:00-8:00pm. We will be showing the Oscar-winning Best Picture of the Year about Moonlight. The film stars Mahershala Ali, Shariff Earp, Janelle Monáe, Duan Sanderson, and Naomie Harris. It’s directed by Barry Jenkins. The movie won three Oscars including, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Chiron is a young man struggling to find his place in the world in a rough Miami neighborhood. Rotten Tomatoes describes the film as, “The tender, heartbreaking story of a young man’s struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality.” In school Chiron is bullied, at home, his mother is emotionally abusive and addicted to crack. Chiron finds a friend and mentor when he meets the local drug dealer, Juan (Mahershala Ali). Video Librarian gives the film 4 stars, writing, “…a powerful drama that shatters stereotypes of the LGBTQ community.” The Philadelphia Inquirer writes, “It’s a true American masterpiece and one of the best films of the decade.”
Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 97% approval rating and the Washington Post calls it “A perfect film…visually rich…[with] a capacity for empathy and compassion.”
