Malden Writers’ Collaborative’s 3rd Annual Public Reading May 30th

The Malden Public Library will host the Malden Writers’ Collaborative’s 3rd Annual Public Reading at 7pm on May 30, 2013 in the Maccario Room. Come and hear original works of fiction and nonfiction by local writers involving murder and suspense, family memories, mystery and intrigue, internal struggles, and much more! The Collaborative meets twice a month, October-May, to share and discuss their own writing and the writing of others. Learn more about the group at www.evangelinevickery.com/tmwc. Light refreshments will be provided through funding by the Friends of the Malden Public Library.

Summer Hours Begin June 8th!

The Malden Public Library will begin its summer hours on June 8th. June 8th will be the first Saturday that the Library is closed and June 20th will be the first Thursday that the Library closes at 6pm. The hours are as follows:

Adult Department-Summer Hours

Monday-Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Thursday*-Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Saturday: Closed

* Closed Thursdays: 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Children’s Room-Summer Hours

Monday: 9:00 a.m. – 8:45 p.m
Tuesday: 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m
Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. – 8:45 p.m
Thursday*: 9:00 a.m. – 5:45 p.m
Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:45 p.m
Saturday: Closed

* Closed Thursdays: 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

The Library is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays.

The Malden Public Library would like to thank the Friends of the Malden Public Library and M&M Liquors for hosting the 11th Annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser on May 3, 2013 in the Converse Memorial Building.

The sold out event raised funds to provide programs, services, and materials for the Malden Public Library.

Chinese Heroes of the American Civil War – May 23rd, Thursday, 7-8 pm

The vast majority of Americans know that many African-Americans participated in the military during the American Civil War, but what is practically unknown is the number of Chinese-Americans who also served.

Military experts and scholars estimated that at least 50 Chinese men were soldiers and sailors in the Union forces. Some were even in the Confederate forces.

Dr. Henry Huie Jung will present his study on Thursday, May 23rd, 7 – 8 pm, in Maccario Room.

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUPS

Hear what others think about a book, and then share your own ideas. You don’t have to create a book club to do it, because The Malden Public Library already hosts two discussion groups:

THE BOOKER PRIZE DISCUSSION GROUP meets at 7:00 p.m. in the library on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Since 1969, the “Booker Prize” has been awarded to the best full-length novel written in English by a citizen of the UK, the Commonwealth, Eire, Pakistan, or South Africa.

• May 22, 2013 – Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood
Summary:
Atwood reconstructs in fictional form the story of Grace Marks, a 16-year-old Canadian housemaid who in 1843, was tried for the murder of her employer and his mistress. The sensationalistic trial made headlines throughout the world, and the jury delivered a guilty verdict. Yet opinion remained fiercely divided about Marks. Such doubts persuaded the judges to commute her sentence to life imprisonment, and Marks spent the next 30 years in an assortment of jails and asylums, where she was often exhibited as a star attraction.

HOMEBOUND DELIVERY

If you are unable to come to the library because of physical limitations, consider using our Homebound Delivery Service. Every four weeks our van delivers library materials to those Malden residents who are unable to make regular visits to the Library.

If you or a member of your family is a qualified Malden resident and interested in this service, just call 781-324-0218, and ask to speak with Mr. Pease.

Program Room

Every Friday at 4:00 p.m., Laurie Rae Tressler from Library Creative Drama, Inc. offers a drop-in Creative Drama program for kids. Children ages 7-10 can come by to participate in theater games and other creative activities. No registration necessary.
