THE BOOKER PRIZE DISCUSSION GROUP meets at 7:00 p.m. in the library on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Since 1969, the “Booker Prize” has been awarded to the best full-length novel written in English by a citizen of the UK, the Commonwealth, Eire, Pakistan, or South Africa.

Summary of Knowledge of Angels:
The ordered tranquility of a fifteenth century Mediterranean island is shattered by the appearance of two outsiders: one, a castaway, plucked from the sea by fishermen, whose beliefs represent a challenge to the established order; the other, a child abandoned by her mother and suckled by wolves, who knows nothing of the precarious relationship between Church and State but whose innocence becomes the subject of a dangerous experiment. Summary of Rabbit Run:
Rabbit, Run is the book that established John Updike as one of the major American novelists of his generation. He is twenty-six years old, a man-child caught in a struggle between instinct and thought, self and society, sexual gratification and family duty—even, in a sense, human hard-heartedness and divine Grace. Though his flight from home traces a zigzag of evasion, he holds to the faith that he is on the right path, an invisible line toward his own salvation as straight as a ruler’s edge.

With 71 submissions, it was extremely difficult for the judges to decide on the top three poems. There are so many talented young poets in Malden and the neighboring communities.

1st place: “The Snow” by Ethan Ribeiro-Barbosa (Malden)
2nd place: “Summer” by Naomi Brill (Malden)
3rd place: “My Pet Barnaglee” by John Vernaglia (Medford)

Popular choice: “A Time I Will Remember” by Manual Quesada Nylen (Malden)

All four poems will be printed in a forthcoming issue of The Malden Observer.

On display are Welch’s jelly jars from the 1960′s, Kraft Cheese “Swankyswigs,” and W.T. Young Foods “Big Top” peanut butter glasses.

“In the early 1960′s, Welch’s Grape Jelly came in jars like this that were decorated with characters from “The Flintones” cartoons. These jars could later be used as glasses once the jelly had been consumed.”

“Swankyswigs” were introduced by Kraft Foods in 1933. These fun and colorfully decorated glass tumblers held Kraft cheese products.”
