You don’t have to create a book club to do it, because The Malden Public Library already hosts two discussion groups:

THE BOOKER PRIZE DISCUSSION GROUP meets at 7:00 p.m. in the library on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Since 1969, the “Booker Prize” has been awarded to the best full-length novel written in English by a citizen of the UK, the Commonwealth, Eire, Pakistan, or South Africa.
Upcoming Books:

• May 22, 2013 – Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood
Summary:
Atwood reconstructs in fictional form the story of Grace Marks, a 16-year-old Canadian housemaid who in 1843, was tried for the murder of her employer and his mistress. The sensationalistic trial made headlines throughout the world, and the jury delivered a guilty verdict. Yet opinion remained fiercely divided about Marks. Such doubts persuaded the judges to commute her sentence to life imprisonment, and Marks spent the next 30 years in an assortment of jails and asylums, where she was often exhibited as a star attraction.

• June 26, 2013 – A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
• July 24, 2013 – Quarantine by Jim Crace
• August 28, 2013 – Europa by Tim Parks

 _______________

THE MONDAY BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP meets at 7:00 p.m. in the library on the first Monday of each month to discuss titles selected by members of the group.
Upcoming Books:

• June 3, 2013 – The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian
Summary:
When Elizabeth Endicott arrives in Aleppo, Syria, she has a diploma from Mount Holyoke, a crash course in nursing, and only the most basic grasp of the Armenian language. It’s 1915, and Elizabeth has volunteered to help deliver food and medical aid to refugees of the Armenian Genocide during the First World War. There she meets Armen, a young Armenian engineer who has already lost his wife and infant daughter. After leaving Aleppo and traveling into Egypt to join the British Army, he begins to write Elizabeth letters, realizing that he has fallen in love with the wealthy young American.

• July 1, 2013 – The Paris Wife by Paula McLain
• Aug. 5, 2013 – The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides
• Sept. 9, 2013 – Two Truths and a Lie by Katrina Kittle
• Oct. 7, 2013 – Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver
• Nov. 4, 2013 – Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson

Just pick a group that’s convenient! New members are always welcome! Copies of books for discussion are available at the information desk.
