Book Discussion Groups

Hear what others think about a book, and then share your own ideas. You don’t have to create a book club to do it, because The Malden Public Library already hosts two discussion groups:

THE BOOKER PRIZE DISCUSSION GROUP meets at 7:00 p.m. in the library on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Since 1969, the “Booker Prize” has been awarded to the best full-length novel written in English by a citizen of the UK, the Commonwealth, Eire, Pakistan, or South Africa. As of September 2013, selection for the “longlist” has been opened to American authors.
Upcoming Books:

• May 27, 2015 – The Story of Lucy Gault by William Trevor
Summary:
The Gault family leads a life of privilege in early 1920s Ireland, but the threat of violence leads the parents of nine-year-old Lucy to decide to leave for England, her mother’s home. Lucy cannot bear the thought of leaving Lahardane, their country house with its beautiful land and nearby beach, and a dog she has befriended. On the day before they are to leave, Lucy runs away, hoping to convince her parents to stay. Instead, she sets off a series of tragic misunderstandings that affect all of Lahardane’s inhabitants for the rest of their lives.

_______________

THE FIRST MONDAY BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP meets at 7:00 p.m. in the library on the first Monday of each month to discuss titles selected by members of the group.
Upcoming Books:

• June 1, 2015 – Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
Summary:
Through the story of Charles Ryder’s entanglement with the Flytes, a great Catholic family, Evelyn Waugh charts the passing of the privileged world he knew in his own youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities. At once romantic, sensuous, comic, and somber, Brideshead Revisited transcends Waugh’s early satiric explorations and reveals him to be an elegiac, lyrical novelist of the utmost feeling and lucidity.

• July 6, 2015 – Baker’s Daughter by Sarah McCoy
• Aug. 3, 2015 – Never Fall Down by Patricia McCormick
• Sept. 14, 2015 – Me before You by JoJo Moyes

Just pick a group that’s convenient! New members are always welcome! Copies of books for discussion are available at the information desk.
