Children’s Summer Reading Program begins July 11

Children (through grade 5) are invited to register for the Summer Reading Program and receive a reading log. Readers are eligible for an incentive prize for each week (7/11-8/17) that they read for two hours or more. (For pre-readers, being “read aloud to” counts!) Registered readers may also enter a weekly raffle by writing a mini book report. Come to the Children’s Room for more information and to pick up the schedule of FREE weekly programs. Questions? Call 781-388-0803.

The Children’s Summer Reading Program is generously funded by Preotle, Lane & Associates, Ltd., with additional support from the Friends of the Malden Public Library, Target, Staples, the Massachusetts Regional Library System and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

Curious about an Author? Need Sources for a Paper?

Want to read about J. K. Rowling, William Shakespeare, John Grisham, Philip Pullman, Khaled Hosseini, C. S. Lewis or hundreds of other authors?

Your library card is your online passport to an author’s brief biography, a summary and criticism of specific works, and a list of awards and prizes.

Simply select ‘Research’ from our Menu Bar, then ‘Online Article Databases’ from the Sidebar. If you are at home, you must now select ‘here’ from within the second paragraph of instructions entitled: ‘Remote Access’. After you have inserted your library card number in the box provided, press GO. You will open a very long list of resources. Scroll down to

    Literary Reference Center

Select that link and … Congratuations! You have arrived!

Now key in an author’s name and press the SEARCH button. The list that is generated includes essays from literary journals, works of criticism, standard reference sets, and international and regional newspapers. You may open these records and print full texts!

Also, if ideas for new authors fail you, this is the place to see lists of writers in adventure, mystery, romance, feminist fiction, sea stories, westerns, or fantasy. Try it!
