Follow the African Diaspora to Brazil, Cuba, and the United States through rhythm and dance! Explore: “Rumba” that national dance of Cuba - “Salsa” hybrid of jazz and tropical music - “Samba” the national dance of Brazil - “Kpanlogo and Gahu” social dances from Ghana - “Soukous” music and dance from the Congo. Watch Mr. Coley dance and play a large variety of drums and percussion. Obtain “hands on” instrument and “on the spot” dance instruction. Learn the background of the instruments and dances. Interactive presentations for all ages and abilities. Drums include timbales, congas, bongos; Africa, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian percussion and carnival dances.
Cornell Coley has a Masters in Education from Cambridge College and completed graduate studies in Dance Ethnology at UCLA. He has been a long-term dance lecturer at Tufts University, Smith College and the 5-college system in Western MA. He has troued regionally and internationally as a dancer, musician, and actor. He founded and directs “JP Tropicale” Latin Jazz Band.
